Please bear with me as I attempt to explain the "Wizard of Oz" from a Buddhist prospective. Also understand that I grabbed hold of a subject larger than I could ever imagine. When I think about what I am attempting to do it is a bit scary because in many ways the "Wizard of Oz" is sacred in that it is a story that means so much to the hearts and minds of so many people worldwide. I must be very careful not to insult the integrity and the spirit of the movie. I write or I have said that the "Wizard of Oz" is a Buddhist movie. The "Wizard of Oz" is not a Buddhist movie however complicated Buddhist theory can be explained using the "Wizard of Oz" to explain Buddhism.

I n explaining complicated Buddhist theory one can get lost in a quagmire of Buddhist knowledge as complicated as quantum physics. For those of you who are trying to learn about Buddhism this lecture is intended to provide a deeper insight into Buddhism. Buddhism for many is a strange esoteric religion combined with some difficult cultural practices not understood by many. We at our website often preach that we should not confuse Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism with Japanese culture. Some things about the Buddhist practice is cultural and some practices are religious. At this time in Nichiren Buddhist practice it is difficult to delineate culture from religion. One thing that we can be clear about is the "Wizard of Oz" is clearly an American cultural icon that has been viewed by over one billion people. When one say something is American as mom, baseball and apple pie the "Wizard of Oz" is American as American can be.
